“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. (ESV)
Are you watching the news? Are you reading articles and feeds? It seems half the world is on fire and the other half is flooding! There are wars and rumors of wars. On the continent of Africa alone, there have been seven coups since August 2020. There are mobs and riots, increased homelessness and violent crime rates are soaring. And let’s not even start on the whole gender thing, fomenting anger and lawlessness. Consider our schools, our communities, our churches, our families. What’s happening? How did we get here? Are we coming to an end? Is this it?
Thankfully, there are life events that seem to hit our reset button: graduations, weddings, anniversaries, promotions, retirements, the birth of a new child or even funerals; there is a common theme from these speaking a simple message — there is more to come. This is not the end. Keep your eyes fixed on what’s ahead. The future is calling.
Before the foundation of the world, God’s eternal purpose and promise that HE swore by Himself was carried out in the Person of Jesus Christ, the promised descendant of Abraham to bless all nations. His death, burial and resurrection on the third day according to the Scriptures is the good news that we receive, believe, and by which we are saved. Then, in John 16:12-15, Jesus whispers into our lives, “There is more.”
“I (Jesus) have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.”
What? Jesus had spoken for three years. He spoke in parables so only the ones with ears to hear would hear. He spoke of His coming death. He said it is to our advantage for Him to go away and a Helper would come. How is Jesus’s absence and the Holy Spirit’s presence to our advantage? What more could the Spirit do that Jesus had not done and could not do? What more could Jesus say and why could the Disciples not bear or understand it at that time?
“But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.”
According to 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is inspired by God …” Forty authors, over 1,500 years, on three different continents, most of whom had never spoken to or met each other — how could they have come up with a harmonious narrative and a historically accurate record of future events through prophecy predicting accurately both comings of Messiah and the destiny of His people? Since His first appearance, we look and watch eagerly, not fearfully, for His return. He is coming just as He said to receive us unto Himself. Maranatha — come Lord!
What is our advantage if Jesus is not bodily with us? The Spirit of God has an infinite reach through His people. More effective ministry can cover the entire world at once, blessing both Jews and Gentiles with the truth. The truth spoken through Isaiah and Habakkuk is being fulfilled in our day: “The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”
What truth? “He (the Spirit of God) will glorify Me (Jesus), for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.” To glorify Him means to honor, esteem, recognize and value Jesus for who He really is — acknowledging Him. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Word — Jesus — is being honored, esteemed and disclosed throughout the earth. To disclose is to announce, make known, properly declare — to reveal Christ accurately and fully.
“All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He will take of Mine and disclose it to you.”
According to Scripture, all authority in Heaven and on earth has been given to Jesus. Those who choose to believe in Him are His, and His people are granted the ability to see Him clearly. Everything points to Jesus. There is nothing in this world that was not created by Him and for Him. And His people who are in the world are visibly pointing to Jesus, fulfilling their purpose of glorifying Him.
HE is GOD, I am not.
HE lived perfectly, I cannot.
HE redeemed, I believe and am accepted.
HE is coming, this is not my home.
Come LORD JESUS.
As human history appears to be ending, remember — by His Word — it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us … an anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast … . (Hebrews 6:18-19)
There is more to come, so much more!
May each day that is left for us bring glory to our Lord Jesus! May every rock and stone cry out “Glory to the Lord Most High! Let all the earth give honor and praise, acknowledging God our Savior, Creator and Redeemer.”
