THE PRAYER OF GLORY

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN: CHAPTER 17

Ten days. A lot can be accomplished in 10 days. I’ve seen a house built in less than 10 days in Lexington for the TV show Extreme Home Makeover. Countries have changed governments in 10 days. Ten days can change your life for the better or wreck your life. Consider these next 10 days as an investment into eternity.

Jesus prayed this most intimate prayer ever recorded before His Disciples. John, by the power of the Spirit, remembered its contents and recorded it for us. We are listening to God talk to Himself. We are listening to an intimate conversation between God the Father and God the Son. Each phrase drips eternal nuance. Each point has eternal consequences. Each word has meaning that affects our own eternal character and destiny.

Eight times in this prayer, Jesus mentions glory (glorify). It is the subject on Jesus’s mind as He has this final moment with His Father before the chaos of the Cross. The very word glorify means something deep and powerful to Christ. If we don’t understand the weight of glory, we won’t understand this prayer. It was the secret of the atom that unleashed nuclear power. It is the secret of glory that unleashes God’s purpose for the planet.

Don’t miss, as you meditate on Jesus’s prayer this week, of how glory/glorify is woven into your own story. He prays specifically for you in this prayer. Let His prayer grasp your soul and alter your course. Notice the interplay of the words “love” and “unity/oneness” with the glory He has planned for you. There is something from eternity past that is being activated in our own souls by the very connections He is praying for in us personally.

Prayer: Father, give me clarity and focus as I study Your Son’s prayer these next 10 days. Thank you for loving me and caring enough to reveal the intimate details of Your heart for me. Thank You for showing Your true character in the relationship with Your Son. Help me to somehow grasp every ounce of these great truths that have been recorded, that when combined, weigh more than all the thoughts of mankind. You say in Your Word that You have “placed eternity in the hearts of men.” Help me to see, to take hold of, to approximate somehow who You are, what You are up to and the glorious future You have lovingly called me into!

We are listening to God talk to Himself. We are listening to an intimate conversation between God the Father and God the Son.

Read the following questions and record your thoughts in your journal:

  • Write out the John 17 resources God has made available to you that are essential for bringing Him glory in your life.
  • As you prepare for tonight’s home group, look back over the devotions from the past week. Which devotions were most meaningful to you and why?
